Description: Taken by photographer Ihna Thayer Frary in 1940, this photograph shows the ruins of a home located between Hudson and Streetsboro in northeastern Ohio. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1873, Ihna Thayer Frary was a prominent American art and architecture scholar, whose primary interest was the architectural heritage of the region of northeastern Ohio known as the Western Reserve. In addition to serving as publicity and membership secretary of the Cleveland Museum of Art, he was a professor of Ohio and American architecture at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University’s School of Architecture. Over the course of his career, Frary was a design consultant for private clients and designed furniture, and was an active member of several prominent arts councils in the Cleveland area. In 1963, Frary and his two sons donated his entire photographic collection to the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection). The Ihna Thayer Frary Collection consists of 4,000 5 x 7 photographs of private residences, churches, taverns, and public buildings, as well as select rural buildings, bridges, archaeological sites, and public monuments. Description: This is a photographic reproduction of a an illustration showing the fueling of a conical blast furnace. Iron and steel production in Ohio go back to its admission to the Union in 1802. The first blast furnace for iron was established in northeastern Ohio near Youngstown. Even though the first furnace was in northeaster Ohio, southern Ohio dominate the first half of the 19th century's iron production, especially at Hanging Rock by the Ohio River. However, from the mid 1800s onward, northeastern Ohio emerged as the primary region for iron production in Ohio by replacing their charcoal furnaces with coal furnaces. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: 1955 calendar advertising and themed around Ohio author and conservation advocate Louis Bromfield's famed Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio. The full-color twelve-month calendar includes color photographs by Joe Munroe and short caption essays by Louis Bromfield. Calendar verso pages feature longer essays on the history and rehabilitation of Malabar and vignettes of farm life also written by Bromfield. The Friends of the Land Collection (1930-1960) contains the papers of the Friends of the Land (1940-1959), a prominent national soil conservation education organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. FOTL produced an international literary arts quarterly, THE LAND (edited by New Deal agriculture writer Russell Lord) in addition to several members' only publications (LAND LETTER) and informational pamphlets. They also hosted annual conferences; ran conservation tours, teacher training labs, and workshops; and operated as a national clearinghouse for conservation information. Ohio farmer and novelist Louis Bromfield was active in the organization. Much of the collection reflects the career and interests of FOTL Executive Secretary Ollie Fink, who was a prominent conservation education pioneer in Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Taken by photographer Ihna Thayer Frary in 1935, this photograph shows Tallmadge Church, also referred to as the First Congregational Church, in Summit County, Ohio. The church's construction, led by architect Lemuel Porter, was completed in 1825, and features a two-story portico and a one hundred foot-high steeple with a weathervane. The church is an example of Federal-style architecture with its roots in New England, a reminder of northeastern Ohio's New England heritage. Description: This photograph shows an aerial photograph of Warren, Ohio located in Trumbull County in northeastern Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Thomas W. Harvey (1821-1892) was an accomplished Ohio educator who is best remembered for his contributions to textbooks during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. After graduating from the Western Reserve Teachers' Seminary in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1844, Harvey established Geauga High School in Chardon, Ohio. In 1848, he accepted a position as principal of a private academy at Republic, Ohio, and in 1851, he became superintendent of Massillon schools, a position he held for fourteen years before becoming the superintendent of Painesville's schools. In 1871, Governor Rutherford B. Hayes appointed Harvey as the Ohio State Commissioner of Public Schools. Harvey held this position for the next three years. Upon completion of his term, he returned to Painesville and assumed his position as superintendent. During his career, Harvey also helped establish the Ohio State Teachers' Association and the Northeastern Ohio Teachers' Association. View on Ohio Memory.
